Steven Gerrard feels Liverpool's record against the rest of the Premier League top six shows they are 'very, very close' to achieving the success they crave.

The Reds were unbeaten in all 10 of their meetings with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur last term, claiming five wins.

Conversely, Jürgen Klopp’s side were guilty of coming unstuck when they faced teams from the lower reaches of the division – an area they know needs improvement, according to Gerrard.

“We’ve got a fantastic manager at the helm. I think Liverpool are very, very close,” the new U18s manager told BT Sport.

“If you look at the statistics in the top six, they’re the best team in terms of head-to-head.

“Liverpool know where they need to improve and it’s the consistency against the teams that are maybe in the bottom half of the table, the teams that sit narrow and compact and are difficult to break down.

“Hopefully we can get the two or three pieces of the jigsaw that are missing. I’m really confident Liverpool can keep moving forward and success can be just round the corner.”
